About this deal

I've had an ex-girlfriend tell me to wear this one before meeting her later that night *wink wink* and I had worn Yves Saint Laurent Y EDP, Acqua di Gio Profumo, Armaf CDNIM and Armaf Ventana(sauvage clone) around her( But take her choice with a grain of salt because she really had bad taste, evident from the fact that she dated me :P) I've had other women in my life compliment me on this one too. I loved Artisan, imagine that on herbal steroids, the sweetness has been toned down to a clean herbal masterpiece that lasts for hours on me. Good opening, you can smell a citrus that's not too common (Clementine I'm guessing), it opens very citrus but not too sweet and soon dries down to a rough musk.

John Varvatos Artisan Pure is a fresh woody-citrusy scent inspired by the forests and hills surrounding the city of Xalapa in Mexico, with rich plantations of coffee and citruses. This fragrance is like a love letter to my childhood, and every time I spray it on I get hit with a wave of nostalgia as I'm transported to the past. The bergamot is incredibly soft (in texture, not presence), bright, and almost juicy, while lending a bit of perceived sweetness to what would otherwise be bone dry. The bombastic nature of the opening settles fairly quickly, and will project well out past an arm's length for a couple of hours, before enveloping you in a personal scent bubble for another several. Lasts 4-6 hours with 1 hour to 1 and a half hours of moderate projection, with okay sillage for the first hour. They mention that its a unique and refreshing citrus scent, perfect for the workplace and that its fantastic quality.

Edit2: Overspray (sprayer gives small amount of perfume, don't have to be afraid of it) - I go easy with 15-20 sprays and wait 10-20 min till I go out, got 2-3 hours of good performance, then it's more intimate. For that reason, this is an excellent base for layering under white floral scents that might be considered ‘unisex’ but lean in a more feminine direction. If this is what the "flagship" of the John Varvatos brand looked like, it is not surprising to me that it is no longer with us.

I grew up in Southern California, spending much of my childhood occupying various corners of the yard at my grandparents' home. I was expecting to love this based on the notes and the hype but it smells like Fantastik disinfectant cleaning spray. I have noticed ZERO people wearing this in my area, aside from me and I would imagine, it would be the same in other locations. Vibrant citruses and lush green notes mingle with rich spices and smooth woods in this highly versatile and likeable fresh masculine scent.

If you're concerned about the chemical smell, however, do yourself a favor and hug an orange tree sitting in the sun by the side of the road in the middle of summer before you assume something is wrong with the bottle. However I decided to give it a few more tries, wearing it at home after work, when my previous fragrance went away. This is all about big rind-y, juicy citrus and green herbaceousness - you get all of that strong up front for about 30-60 minutes, but it dies down pretty quickly and unfortunately the base of this cologne is seriously lacking in power. The crisp, woody, citrus scent highlights the leaves, branches and fruits of petitgrain from the bitter orange tree. The bottle is definitely pretty though so if you care more about the bottle and not so much the fragrance then 10/10 recommend.
