Port Royale 4 is an open waters game where you make it what you will. There isn’t an overarching narrative to drive your time in the game. Ok, so that isn’t entirely true. There is a campaign which lets you play as various nations. An introductory video shows slides while a narrator sets the stage. The shape of the world during the 1500’s is imparted to the player before handing control over. Even though I typically avoid campaigns for this style of game, it was actually nice to have a little more guidance after completing the tutorial. Placing buildings will often grant a variety of positive or negative effects on surrounding buildings. For example: Building cities is similarly deep, but mechanically accessible thanks to the development energy placed into getting the user experience right. Each building has an impact (possibly positive, possibly negative) on the buildings around it, and the game helpfully pops up a colour gradient to show you whether that new building that you’re looking to construct will be in a good spot, or potentially drag down the quality of the facilities around it. It’s a challenging puzzle to sort through at times because space is at a premium in each city and there are a lot of possible buildings available, but you’ll never struggle to understand the impact of the decisions that you make, and that is key for any simulator or strategy game.

Pay particular attention to the general direction the wind blows and storm areas. You ideally want your trade routes to go with the wind so you save a lot of time. If the wind direction in red on the map it indicates an area where storms frequently occour and you should avoid if possible a they can cause damage to your ships if they get caught up in one. Despite this, the tactical action is clean, logical, and the game teaches you everything you need to know in the span of a single five-minute tutorial. The best way to accomplish this is to take whatever commodities you have in abundance and sell it to other cities at the highest price possible. You can become the master of commerce in campaign modes focused in locations around Spain, England, France, or the Netherlands, or in a free mode where the only goal is to become as filthy rich as possible. The tactics you have available to you during confrontations are determined by the type of vessel that makes up your convoy and the captain. If several vessels in your convoy have the same tactic you will be able to use the tactic more often. Vessel tactics have a cooldown which it is essential that you take into consideration when initiating combat. Captains tactic can be used independently from the type of vessel and the character is able to otain additional captains tactics by completing tasks. A maximum of 2 of each tactic can be collected. Captains Tactics can be used by your captain during naval battles but what is available will depend on the captains's level. Listed below are the Vessel Tactics and Captains Tactics in Port Royale 4. Of course, it doesn’t look up to the same standards of the game on PlayStation 4 ( you can read my review of that version here). The graphics are a noticeable step downwards in terms of resolution and fidelity, and that lends the world a grainy look that is disappointing, given the gorgeous Caribbean vibe of the game on the other platforms. There are also some noticeable loading times that disrupt the flow of the action just a little too much, and the frame rate does noticeably stutter at times. It’s hardly an issue, since this is a simulation game and entirely disinterested in testing reflexes, but it’s all worth nothing in the context that if the presentation is your only priority, the other versions are superior. Definitely. In fact, the upgrading of cities and the city-building element gains even more depth in Port Royale 4.Enhanced city-building: The new hex-grid helps players create unique and profitable cities to expand their huge trading network in the Caribbean. Managing your convoy can be daunting, especially once you build or buy more ships. Setting up trade routes so vessels will travel automatically and conduct business on their own becomes a necessity. Once you've gotten the hang of things it's pretty easy to make money. A bit too easy in fact. After grasping the basics I started to make significant profits to the point that the game felt like it was playing itself. I was just watching all my ships travel across the routes, which was sort of boring. The current vessel loses it's movement points and attracts all enemies within two field range, as long as it is possible. Yes, there will be retail versions of Port Royale 4 on PC, Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch. Will the whole map be accessible right from the start?
