About this deal

Place a piece of ironing paper or parchment paper on top of the taped design and proceed with the ironing process as usual. The masking tape will protect your design and provide a barrier between the beads and the surface.

If you're doing hama bead designs with children, make sure to keep small hands far away from the iron. To make designs that last, it's best to leave the ironed beads to cool overnight before they're played with.

We have used the cheaper beads in the past and to make your design on the pegboard they are fine but they are a lot harder to iron and fuse together. Create your design: Place individual beads onto the pegboard, following the chosen pattern. For young children, a small sample design or simple shapes like hearts and stars are a great way to start.

Success!

However an exception is the Picture Beads sold by Hobbycraft. I've used lots of these Hama style beads and found that they are nearly as good as branded Hama beads. Hobbycraft sell their beads in mixed bags of related colours, like blues and greens, and they are much cheaper, especially if you catch them on special offer. They are exactly the same size as branded Hama beads and can be used interchangeably with your Hama beads and Hama branded pegboards.

Perler beads, also known as Hama beads, fuse beads, Nabbi beads, or melty beads, are a fun and inexpensive art form that can keep young children engaged for hours, and today we’re going to answer one of the most pressing questions when it comes to this craft form – how to iron perler beads. If you are looking to buy a pegboard or two I'd recommend starting with a square, hexagonal and circular board as these will allow you to create a wide range of designs. The pegboards can be used over and over again, as long as you are careful not to over iron your projects (see more ironing tips for Hama beads below) Hama beads tend to have a lower melting point than Perler beads, but as a general rule, you can mix and match brands of beads without problems. In this guide, we’ve covered what exactly perler beads are and how they work, how to get started with them and the best supplies to buy, as well as some fab inspiration for your first project. What are perler beads?

Hama beads are available in three different sizes - Maxi, Midi and Mini. The Maxi beads have a diameter of 10 mm and are aimed at young children completing their first Hama bead projects. The Midi beads measure 5 mm in diameter and are the most common size of bead. These are the beads that I most often work with, and they are suitable for both children and adults to use. The smallest beads are the Mini beads, and with a diameter of 2.5 mm they really are very tiny. It's easiest to manipulate them with tweezers, and they are definitely more suited to teenagers and adults as they are very fiddly to use. These fabulous fusible bead projects are a great Halloween craft activity for kids of all ages, and lots of these perler bead projects would make great non-candy treats to share on Halloween. Perler beads (you might call Hama beads, or fusible beads) are a super fun craft activity for kids from age 6 right up to adults. Getting crafty with Perler bead is a great activity if you have a group of kids of different ages and interests, and it’s the perfect tween and teen craft too.
