This new partnership with Madlib is a bid for commercial stability, and at first listen it's a good match. An impromptu video for "Accordion" was filmed in 2004 but was not released until 2008's In Living the True Gods DVD. The end of the record includes two of its best cuts in "All Caps" and "Rhinestone Cowboy" (which boasts one of my favorite lines ever: "Got more soul than sock with a hole"!

Madvillainy gets close to the genius seen on Quasimoto's Unseen, and like that record this one might take a few listens to find it. Any truly great hip-hop album's strength lies in its production - Illmatic, 36 Chambers and My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy are my favourite hip-hop albums and I think that they're all perfectly produced and I'd most definitely add Madvillany into that exclusive club. The flow of the album is good too; the short track times keep the album going without ever getting repetitive, although there are songs I wish were longer because they are just so good ("Accordion", "Raid", and "All Caps" to name my three top). As the name implied, the Amalgam Universe brought together the two most dominant and popular comic factions-- Marvel and DC-- and all of their respective characters, styles and quirks. Madlib is a freaking awesome producer, going above and beyond what's normally expected from the men behind the boards.In 2016 Q listed Madvillainy among the albums that didn't appear in their list of the best albums of last 30 years, stating that "underground hip-hop's cracked geniuses, Madlib and MF Doom, unite on a labyrinth of weed-stained vignettes that combine invention and accessibility". Rolling Stone described Madlib's tracks as, "fuzzy and crackling with dust", and praised MF Doom, whose flow was commended as "a particularly elegant slur, with syllables spreading over a beat, not crisply adhering to it".

Other guests include the bad character, Lord Quasimoto, on "Americas Most Blunted" and the Sun Ra-inspired "Shadows of Tomorrow"; Wildchild blasts million-miles-an-hour rhymes on "Hardcore Hustle" and Stacy Epps floats through "Eye. For the final version of the album, Doom altered his voice, described by Peanut Butter Wolf as going from "really hyper, more enthusiastic" to "a more mellow, relaxed, confident, less abrasive", and changed some lyrics to coincide with this change.Very few rappers possess the same sense of humor, level of wit, and originality that DOOM possessed during his lifetime. Here, Vaughn steams on an ex-girlfriend's unfaithfulness-- but she's cheating with Metalface, another Dumile alias. Interestingly the 180gram pressing is more compressed grooves with more dead wax in the center, especially on SIDE A. Fun fact: Since hearing "Accordion" on this record, I have actually changed the way I pronounce the word "swords" to better approximate DOOM's pronunciation. Madlib and Doom are individually at their most refined here, and together, they've created one of the most exciting blockbuster alliances in the underground to date. It is a characteristic MF DOOM release, with 22 tracks of varying length, including a number of interludes and sample-based skits that add depth to the storyline.

Madvillainy is the only album by MC/producer duo Madvillain, featuring MF DOOM rapping and Madlib producing. I was hoping for a little more pop in the vocals and some brightness, the record seems to add a lot of warmth instead - not the record's fault. Madlib lays down the canvas and paints a wonderful picture, but he still leaves space for Doom to express himself and put his own distinctive mark on the painting.
