About this deal

There aren’t many colour pages in this, but the opening first page is in colour where we see the battlefield with the rain coming down - it’s so cinematic, but Inoue manages to draw rain so perfectly you can hear and smell it. A história baseia-se num clássico sobre a história do Japão, com guerras e samurais, daí uma certa violência, com muitas lutas e sabres a decepar algumas cabeças. Vagabond is an excellent samurai-themed manga, telling a semi-biographical story of the famous Miyamoto Musashi, one of the greatest samurai in history. Vagabond is an action-packed portrayal of the life and times of the quintessential warrior-philosopher-one of the most celebrated samurai of all time!

So by the time you have Vizbig Edition Volume 12, you will have read Volumes 1 - 36 of the regular editions. Takezō's vicious nature has made him an outcast even in his own village, and he is hunted down like an animal. This scene was also a new idea he had when writing the manga as he felt that Musashi required a major challenge than in the novel. The typical feelings of alienation, mistrust and difference between the protagonist and his community are emphasized here by the differences in both physical and behavioural depiction of the various characters.

I read reviews of Vagabond before actually reading the manga and some of them were negative which is why I should mention that despite reading my review, it is highly possible that you may not like Vagabond. And yet he is able to accurately convey his thoughts and feelings in a way that amazes and teaches his samurai peers. Depois de um período inicial a habituar-me a ler um livro de trás para a frente e da esquerda para a direita.

The action scenes are epic and then its upto Takezo to go back home and inform Matahachi's mom and fiancee about this betrayal (of Matahachi running off with another woman) and then the horrors he encounters with everyone after him and its just epic and that last scene just wow! In Musashi and Jōtarō's arrival to the Hōzōin spears, Musashi's first fight against the Hōzōin, its aftermath, Musashi's second fight against Hōzōin Inshun. This is the journey of a wild young brute who strives to reach enlightenment by way of the sword-fighting on the edge of death. The eventual release of the sixth volume received more acclaim from the Manga Life for further developing Musashi's bushido, his acceptance of his weak point and how Matahachi also kept appearing despite the two still not meeting.

And that scene when Takezo is fighting off the soldiers and his friend and Oko are having coitus (yep using it) is just gruesome and amazing and sets this manga apart. New chapters often begin with a page or two done in colored watercolors that gives the panels a softer, fluid feel. I have to admit that sometimes the action scenes are a bit difficult to parse and it's not always clear what's going on in a given set of panels, but overall the story flows very well and you can't help but get lost in the beautiful art.

Done primarily in black-and-white, the art is very cinematic and being a dramatization of historical events, there are images that look dreamlike. Peter Fobian of Crunchyroll commented that Slam Dunk 's Hanamichi Sakuragi and Musashi are similar protagonists being young, egotistical prodigies, but that "Musashi is a force of nature.Miyamoto Musashi and Sasaki Kojiro’s intertwining paths lead them toward what will be the greatest samurai duel in Japanese history. Volume 1 begins in the same place as the novel: at the end of the historic battle of Sekigahara two survivors, childhood friends Shinmen Takezo (soon the re-christen himself Miyamoto Musashi) and Hon'iden Matahachi, are found by a young girl (Akemi) and her mother Oko who live by stealing from corpses on the battlefield. As a fan of Miura's amazing artistry, seeing it at nearly twice the size makes each book's evolutionary leap in craftsmanship very exciting; it's a well-deserved deluxe presentation that sets it apart as the unique work that it is, and provides a fresh perspective on one of the great fantasy epics in the comic medium.
